Casablanca

Casablanca is Morocco’s commercial hub as a result of which it is a buzzing, forward-looking city that never sleeps. The city’s enormous growth over the last century can be seen in the lay-out of the city centre which consists of beautiful wide avenues radiating outwards, lined with neo-Moorish and Art Deco columns, intricately carved wooden balconies, and colonnades.

Although Casablanca has no natural harbour, the impressive two miles long Moulay Youssef jetty ensures that the city now operates Morocco’s main port and the fourth largest in Africa. As a result of this a true cosmopolitan atmosphere can be felt in the city. A good example of the thriving atmosphere is Casablanca’s central market. Here fresh produce is sold in a traditional African market – sea food straight from the Atlantic Ocean, piles of fresh fruit, and locally grown flowers as far as the eye can see.

Set around a central fountain in the heart of the city, Mohamed V square is surrounded by splendid examples of French Colonial architecture. A large number of the buildings here, which house government and public offices, reflect the design style known as 'Mooresque.' This styling exemplifies both Moroccan and French architectural elements. This square truly comes to life at night when it is lit up and makes for an excellent place to be seen. Close by are the Mahakma Law Courts, which were built in 1959. The inside of the courts is lavishly decorated with Moorish plaster and ornate mosaics. A lovely fountain and quiet courtyards are found within the Mahakma du Pacha at the Habous Quarter, which is the Islamic law court and official salon of the Pacha of Casablanca. Another area that offers plenty of nightlife is the Boulevard de la Corniche. Casablancans come here to go out, meet friends and eat in some of the best restaurants in town. The area surrounding the Boulevard is the Riviera of the African continent. During the day the beach here is packed with sun seekers – locals and tourists alike. The promenade hosts a variety of eating options: from street vendors selling pastries, pies, and snacks to quality restaurants catering for western tourists and business people.
