Bastia

Corsica is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean, and probably has the most varied landscape. As a result it is also known as “L’île de beauté” – Island of Beauty. Tall mountains inland turn to sandy beaches on an azure coast, with long white sandy beaches.

Bastia is the main port of the island and is situated near Cap Corse in the northeast of the island. The city’s main economic activities are fishing and wine export. Corsican wines have a good reputation and are solid and colourful. Bastia was founded in 1378 as a fortified site, a “Bastia”. The town grew and in the 1480s the ramparts, which today are an important tourist attraction, were completed. Later, during the 16th and 17th centuries, the high town was developed following fashionable Genoese patterns of straight streets in a grid pattern. In the 19th century the city grew considerably as a result of economic prosperity and many impressive buildings sprang up during this time; for example the Law Courts, an extension to the Place de Nicolas, and many residential buildings along wide boulevards. During all this activity the old town remained intact and has retained its character to this day.

The Old Port (Vieux Port) is a wonderfully atmospheric part of the town – built in the 14th century the buildings have a certain faded charm and surround the marina. From the Dragon jetty it is possible to see as far as Elba, Capraia, and Monte Cristo on a clear day.

A daily market (Tuesday to Sunday) can be found in the Place du Marché where cooked meats, cheeses, fish and other Corsican gastronomic specialities are for sale amidst a typically Mediterranean bustle. Corsican food is excellent: sausages, smoked hams and salamis with an inevitable Italian influence. Wild boar, goat and lamb are popular, and fish and shellfish are found in abundance. Cheese and dishes prepared with sweet chestnuts are another speciality.
