Catania (Sicily)

Catania is Sicily’s second largest city, and is the capital of the province with the same name. The city is located between the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna, the biggest active European volcano. Long, sandy beaches are only short distance away from the town centre, and stretch from Messina to Augusta through Catania and Taormina.

Catania is surrounded by a variety of landscapes: to the south lies the most fertile area of the province used predominantly to grow vines. It runs along the river Simeto, the estuary of which has been declared an area of outstanding natural beauty. Towards the west lies Mount Etna; a rich volcanic landscape that has been turned into a national park “Parco dell’Etna” - good for breathtaking scenery, beautiful sights, and spectacular views!

The island of Sicily is located only 4 kms off Italy’s big toe. Sun drenched, Mediterranean, surrounded by white beaches, scattered with picturesque fishing villages, and lined by modern beach resorts, the island has a lot to offer. Ancient history, modern beach holidays and anything in between are catered for. Seekers of excitement will have all their dreams come true with Mount Etna, Europe’s largest and possibly the second most active volcano on earth. Tourists wishing to visit the volcano are advised to take professional advice regarding weather conditions etc because, although good fun and very impressive, climbing Etna isn’t without danger.

Food lovers are in the right place on Sicily, and Catania’s cuisine is among the best on the island. Being next to the sea, the freshest fish is brought on dry land every day. You must try the insalata di mare (sea food salad) and the maculi marinati (anchovies marinaded with olive oil and lemon). Another fabulous dish is the Pasta alla Norma, with tomato sauce, fried aubergines, basil and lashings of ricotta. Finish off your meals with some local delicacies, such as olivette di Sant’Agata, marzipan, the famous ossi di morto, the torrone of Sant’Agata. Then wash it all down with some outstanding Etnean red or white wine, and you’ve had a culinary experience you’re not likely to forget in a hurry!
