Crete (Heraklion)

Heraklion is a modern town and the largest on the island of Crete, and is the administrative, commercial, industrial and agricultural centre of the island. It is also the capital of the region of Crete. Here you’ll find side by side the beautiful and the ugly, the old and the new, the apparent architectural chaos and the mixture of buildings from different civilizations which makes the city really interesting and attractive. The fact that you may walk by the Venetian port enjoying the view of an ancient period and in two minutes distance you may find yourself having a coffee or a drink in a very modern and trendy bar makes for a very special experience.

Eleftherios Venizelos square (Platia Eleftheriou Venizelou), the Lion’s square as the locals call it, is the city’s traditional centre. You could spend all day here. Around this square you’ll find all the shopping streets of the town. There are many restaurants, taverns, cafés and bars offering Cretan specialities.

The eastern part of Heraklion has some major resorts near the sea like Hersonissos, some major archaeological sites like Malia, and many important Byzantine churches. Situated only 5 kilometres south from the centre of Heraklion is Knossos, the largest and the most brilliant centre of Minoan civilization. Hersonissos, only an hour from the centre of Heraklion, is the night-life paradise of Crete. There are hundreds of bars, big hotels and nice restaurants. There are also nice beaches, especially “limanakia”, a number of very small bays. Ideal for sea, sun and fun lovers.

Great beaches, intensive night life, warm people, great cuisine and the strange “game” between the old and the new are promising unforgettable holidays on the
island.
