Innsbruck

Its location makes Innsbruck (the so-called “Capital of the Alps”) the ideal destination for skiing and snowboarding in winter, and mountain climbing and hiking in the summer. The town itself offers extensive sporting facilities all year round and has a beautiful town centre with historic buildings and a really friendly atmosphere. Surrounded by impressive mountains, the Nordkette, the Patscherkofel, and Serles you don’t have to go far to find some excellent slopes; there are nine ski regions in the immediate vicinity of the town – 285 kms of piste with 80 cable cars and lifts in areas such as Mutteralm, the Stubaier Gletscher, Schlick 2000, and Axamer Lizum.

If you fancy a break from the slopes the town itself has much to offer. The Old Town dates back to the Middle Ages, and is still a charming collection of medieval houses. Facing the central square is the Golden Roof, built as a residence for Tyrolean kings and queens in the 15th century. From here they could see the tournaments in the town square without leaving their palace. The Golden Roof itself is a three storey balcony covered with almost 3,000 copper roof tiles.
The Imperial Palace is of Late Gothic architectural construction and dates back to 1460. The palace exists of four wings around the giant central hall (Riesensaal), painted in splendid white and gold. The gothic cellar is available for private functions. Ambras Castle is set in extensive English Gardens high above Innsbruck. The building houses Europe’s oldest museum, including arms and armor, art, and books. There is also the Habsburg’s Portrait Gallery displaying works by Tizian, Van Dyck and Velásquez.

Airport information

Innsbruck Airport is located approximately 4 kms west of the city centre.

By car
Innsbruck Airport can be reached via the A12 Inntal-Autobahn. Follow the signs to the airport from the Innsbruck West junction. From the city centre: follow the B171 (Kranebitter Allee) and look out for the signs to the airport.

By coach
Bus route F operates every 15 minutes between Innsbruck train station and the airport. Journey time is approximately 18 minutes. The bus stops are located immediately in front of the main station and airport building.
