Menorca (Mahon)

Situated just 34 kms from Majorca, Menorca is the second largest of the Balearic Islands. It has retained its original character because it is protected from major development, and offers fantastic sights for lovers of nature. The island has almost as many beaches as Majorca and Ibiza combined, making it an ideal place for a family holiday. The south side of the island features sandy beaches sheltered by cliffs, and peaceful holiday resorts, whereas the rockier north side has quaint fishing villages.

Mahon, the island’s walled capital, is a bustling port on a huge natural harbour, and many impressive buildings reflecting its long history as a working harbour and defensive landmark. The Place Esplanada is the island’s largest square and a popular meeting place for both locals and tourists. Lined with cafés and restaurants in historic buildings, it was once a military parade ground. One of Mahon’s most beautiful buildings is the Gobierno Militar (Military Governor’s House), which is used by the army to date and was built in the 18th century.

At the other end of the island is the ancient town of Ciutadella, graceful and full of winding streets. The Castell de Sant Nicolau was built in the 17th century to watch over Ciutadella’s harbour. It has a working drawbridge, and offers magnificent sea views. The castle features several exhibitions every year.
